Councillors put their best feet forward with Fitbit scheme
- 25 March 2019
Councillors in the borough of Rochdale have been moving more thanks to Fitbits.
Link4Life provided 15 of our councillors with the fitness trackers for 3 months.
Councillors were supported to maintain or increase their physical activity levels and were given expertise and guidance by Link4Life's nutritionist, Emma Kershaw, and exercise professional, Adele Hoolahan.
Adele is delighted the councillors have seen tangible benefits in a short space of time: "Councillors have busy schedules which often involve meetings and sitting for long periods of time.
"It's been brilliant to see how the fitness trackers have encouraged them to move more and ultimately improve their health."
At the start of the programme, the participating councillors had their blood pressure taken as well as using a boditrax machine to measure body composition including breaking weight down into fat mass and muscle mass, and metabolic age. Metabolic age takes all your measurements and personal data into account and gives you your physical age.
Councillor Janet Emsley, our Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Community and Culture, saw stark results over the course of the programme.
Her readings at the end of the programme showed she lost 6.2kg of fat mass and gained 2.4kg of muscle mass. This difference brought her metabolic age down by 11 years.
Councillor Emsley said: "I am delighted to have seen such rapid results, I feel so much better in myself.
"People say that small steps make a big difference but I'm really impressed and surprised that just being aware of my activity levels has made such a big difference."
