What's your medicine?
Roadshow Memory Well-being Café
Tuesday 12 June 2018
Touchstones Rochdale and the Alzheimer’s Society will be hosting a Roadshow Memory Well-being Café on Tuesday 12 June in the Education Studio at Touchstones Rochdale. This FREE drop-in event is for people living with dementia and their carers, family and friends. The event will include the opportunity to take a tour with the curator, get involved with some craft activities or just come along and have a cup of tea.
As part of the fascinating new Museum exhibition at Touchstones Rochdale, 'From Herbs to Hospitals: Health and Wellbeing in Rochdale', artist Sarah Albon has created a number of delicate but colourful sculptural objects inspired by individuals from the Alzheimer's Society Memory Wellbeing Cafe's in Milnrow and Middleton. Touchstones Rochdale Museum Service have been working closely with the Memory Wellbeing Cafe's this Spring sparking conversations around the topic 'What's Your Medicine?' through creative arts activities. Capturing these personal and heart-warming conversations gave a reflection of the variety of unique experiences, hobbies and fond memories which participants described as their personal 'tonic to life'.
Inspired by the individual responses a number of colourful sculptural objects have been created using glass medical objects to tell the personal stories of people effected by dementia. The sculptures will be displayed as part of the larger exhibition 'From Herbs to Hospitals: Health and Wellbeing in Rochdale' at Touchstones Rochdale Museum.
To celebrate the launch of the exhibition and this new artwork a celebration event will be held on the 12th June (2.30-430pm) at Touchstones Rochdale. There will be a variety of activities including live music, a cream tea, herb planting, print making, meet the curator plus a chance to explore the Museum Service's new Dementia Friendly Loan Box service.
The exhibition 'From Herbs to Hospitals: Health and Wellbeing in Rochdale' tells the story of the development of health and wellbeing in Victorian Rochdale through to the advent of the NHS in the 1940's.
Karen Heatley, Museum Curator at Touchstones Rochdale said: “Our creativity is a means of connecting with ourselves, others and the world around us, is vital to building a wellbeing-based society. We live in a very fast paced world and creative engagement is a way, not only of having fun, but also helping us to feel able to cope with stress, knowing who we are and finding ways to be mindful, to relax and enjoy the moment. You don’t need to be good at art to join in or get the benefit from creative engagement.’’
Alison Roberts, Dementia Support Worker for Alzheimer’s Society in Rochdale said: “We are delighted to be uniting with Touchstones Rochdale by co-hosting a Roadshow Memory Well-being Café on Tuesday 12 June These cafes can really help improve people’s quality of life. They give people with the condition and their carers the opportunity to socialise with others in similar situations and tackle social isolation. They’re also a great source of information and guidance which can help people to live well with the condition.”
