Inspirational Doreen reveals secret to long life
- 22 September 2014
Langley resident, Doreen is a regular at Middleton Arena's Heartline Club often attending twice a week and still taking the bus from Bowlee where she lives.
The Heartline Club was founded in 1990 by a small group of heart patients to help, support and encourage those with heart and heart related problems to take part in physical activity. Numbers have now increased to over 200 members and there is a full and varied programme of events throughout the year.
Doreen has been attending the Club for all of those fourteen years. She currently takes part in the armchair exercise class which she says helps now to keep her fit and active.
Link4Life Healthy Communities Co-ordinator, Paul Gardner is developing exercise activities in the borough with a particular focus on older people. He said, "Doreen is a real inspiration. It is hard to believe that she will be 100 next year. Speaking to her it is clear that she sees staying active as the secret to long life".
Sharing her secret to success, Doreen said, "I am very lucky. I have the support of great friends and family and that's one reason why I enjoy the Heartline Club so much. I enjoy the social events and meeting all the friends I've made over the years. But it is the exercise definitely that keeps me going and I intend to stay active for as long as I possibly can."
Asked what her advice would be to others, particularly those who are older, she said, "It's never too late to start to exercise – it's doesn't have to be too strenuous, just find something you enjoy, something that gets you out of the house and meeting other people. It makes a world of difference."
The Middleton Arena Heartline Club meets every Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 12noon. To find out further information contact the Arena on 0161 662 4000 or visit www.link4life.org/middletonarena .
