Hollingworth Lake Water Activity Centre offers safe, enjoyable learning opportunities that link into the National Curriculum and the learning outside the classroom manifesto.

We offer a variety of packages that cater for pupils at Key stage 1 to 4 and beyond. The Centre holds an Adventure Activities Licence allowing it to provide adventurous activities for people under the age of 18. This ensures standards of safety provision, suitability and condition of equipment and qualifications of instructional and safety staff.

National Curriculum

Our activity sessions and programmes support schools in delivering the PE curriculum and ensure that children 'take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team' (National Curriculum). Our activities also cover other elements of the curriculum such as Science, Mathematics, Geography and History. Adventurous activities support the teaching of the following National Curriculum requirements:

  • Provides opportunities to improve health and fitness
  • Develops fundamental movement skills
  • Develops balance, agility and coordination
  • Introduces Adventure challenges and competitive games
  • Introduces water based environments
  • Develops understanding of weather patterns and the water cycle
  • Air resistance, water resistance and friction
  • Introduces geographical vocabulary, map reading and use of compass
  • Local and world history studies – Rochdale canal, industrial revolution, history of transport (canoes / ships)

These one hour sessions are designed to build confidence in children from 4 years old in open water, swimming ability is not essential.

Kitted out in wetsuit and buoyancy aids children are encouraged into the water with games and lots of splashing.

For slightly older children the session take place in rafted canoes gaining the opportunity to paddle around the lake and take part in canoe orienteering.

We can accommodate large groups of pupils and provide a wide range of activities for full days or even a week.

These packages are suitable for a whole year group away day, for start of term team building and as an end of year rewards week.

Our termly programmes compliment school, college and university courses such as GCSE PE, National Diploma in Public Services and Sport & Outdoor Development Degrees.

They give students intensive, high quality training and additional NGB qualifications and certificates that can go towards final year exam and coursework results.

All Ability Adventure

We are very proactive about providing accessible activities for people with disabilities.

There are a wide range of activities available including sailing, canoeing and kayaking together with climbing and access bikes. Activities can be developed to be suitable for people who just want to come and try, through to people wanting to do personal performance awards.

All staff at the Centre have received an extensive amount of training and specialist equipment is available for supporting people.

Outreach Adventure Service

We can bring Adventure to your school with our Outreach Adventure Service.

We can offer archery, mountain biking shore trax (purpose built off road course) and problem solving all at your venue, cutting out any transportation costs and saving your time.
