Local heritage enthusiast loans historic postcards to display alongside contemporary artworks from the local community
- 28 December 2017
A generous loan to Touchstones Rochdale Art Gallery will see a collection of historic postcards of the local area form part of a new exhibition at Touchstones Rochdale. The postcards belonged to David Ricketts, who was an avid collector of items linked to local heritage, who sadly passed away in December 2017. His wife Beryl Ricketts kindly offered to loan the postcards to Touchstones Rochdale and staff were very pleased that it would link with the new exhibition. The postcards range from historic scenes of natural beauty spots to more recent views of local landmarks.
The new exhibition at Touchstones Rochdale is part of an exciting new competition and exhibition to showcase local artistic talent. Along historic items from the museum collection and Mr. Ricketts collection new artwork will be displayed celebrates the artistic talent of the Borough! Established artists and amateurs alike who live or work in the borough of Rochdale are invited to exhibit their artworks which celebrate Rochdale. For this year’s competition, we are looking for submissions which can be turned in to postcards to promote our wonderful Borough including Rochdale, Middleton, Heywood, Pennines Townships.
The exhibition will feature all entries and some examples of postcards from our collection, the scenic alongside the weird and wonderful! All mediums are encouraged as long and they are original and received as postcard size. Entries cost £5 per postcard for adults and £2 per postcard for under 18’s and full time students. Individuals can submit multiple artworks to the exhibition.
There’s an added incentive for this annual exhibition: a number of prizes including free tickets to our events, vouchers for art materials, £100 cash and one lucky entrant will have their postcard reproduced and for sale in the Rochdale Visitor Information Centre shop, in Touchstones Rochdale.
There will also be a ‘Young Peoples’ Prize, a ‘People’s Choice’ prize and an ‘Artistic Excellence’ Prize, judged by an independent panel of artists, Councillors and a representative from Rochdale Royal Mail.
Councillor Janet Emsley, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Community & Culture is excited about the new artistic opportunity, “I encourage local artists to embrace the challenge to produce an original postcard. All our Townships have inspirational places and people that can stimulate the artist in anyone, I'm really looking forward to seeing the results!”
Postcard entries can be put up for sale and entrants will also have the opportunity to donate their artworks to the Local Studies Archive, ensuring that the work is kept for future generations to enjoy.
